Last month, a couple from Lafayette sat across from me at their kitchen table, their young German Shepherd mix pulling at the leash even indoors. They had already spent hours researching trainers online, but every website seemed to list different prices, different formats, and different promises. “We just want to know what we’re actually paying…
After decades of working with dogs and their people across the East Bay, one lesson stands above the rest: training is not about commands – it is about the relationship. The dogs who are a joy to live with are not the ones who have memorized the most tricks. They are the ones who feel…
What happens when your dog sits perfectly in the kitchen but forgets everything when a skateboard rolls past? That gap is common. Dogs do not automatically understand that a cue learned in a quiet room also applies on a crowded sidewalk, near another dog, or beside a busy trail. Bay Area life asks dogs to…
Can you picture a moment when you called your dog’s name in a busy park and all they did was chase after a squirrel while you stood there wondering why they didn’t listen? It happens to almost every dog owner at some point. You can train “sit” or “come” in your living room on a…

What if your dog is not trying to be “difficult,” but is honestly asking you for space in the only way they know how? On busy walks, that question matters, because reactivity is often a safety strategy, not a personality flaw. When the sidewalk feels crowded and unpredictable, our job is to make the world…
What if the first thing you teach your puppy is not “sit,” but a simple habit that makes every other lesson feel smoother? Those early days at home can feel like naps, zoomies, and sudden surprises on the rug, all happening before you finish your coffee. We can absolutely get ahead of it, and we…
If your puppy could write a job description for you, would it say “kind leader with clear rules” or “inconsistent roommate who panics when I chew the couch”? Those early weeks are when everyday habits get written into your puppy’s routine, and routines are what later become “behavior problems.” When we start training early, we…
